Special Needs at Green Hammerton CE Primary School

Green Hammerton is very proud of the provision it makes for children with Special Educational Needs and is very grateful to the parents of these children for specifically choosing us to educate their children. Our named SENCO (Special Educational Needs Coordinator) is Mrs Williams

Many children at some time in their school career need some additional help or support. For some children this may be short term; for others it may be ongoing throughout their time in school. Some children need a low level of support; others may need a higher level, perhaps involving outside agencies. Help may be concerned with additional needs in learning, behaviour, social development, language development or a physical or sensory disability. The vast majority of additional needs can be accommodated within the mainstream classroom.

We have a high level of support available within the school in terms of staffing, resources and expertise. We operate a policy of early intervention designed to identify children who need support early so that timely and effective intervention can take place. Please follow the links below to learn about the provision that we make above and beyond statutory requirements.

All North Yorkshire maintained schools have a similar approach to meeting the needs of pupils with Special Educational Needs and/or Disabilities (SEND). They are supported by the Local Authority to ensure that all pupils, whatever their specific needs, make the best possible progress in school. The Local Authority has published its Local Offer for parents/carers of children who have Special Educational Needs or a disability (SEND) and all those who support children with additional needs. This can be found at:

The Access Policy will inform you of our accessibility arrangements for SEND children and the steps we take to ensure that children with SEND do not get treated less favourably than their peers.

The School's Access Plan can be found here.

Dyslexia is a term used to describe a difficulty learning to read or interpret words, letters, and other symbols. It is known as a specific learning difference (SpLD); indicating an obvious issue that does not affect general intelligence.

North Yorkshire PACT supports the families of children with special needs. Please follow this link to the PACT Website.

Your support for your child’s education is crucial to their progress.  Please tell us if there are any adjustments we need to make to help you support your child, for example: letters in large font; letters in different languages; wheelchair access; explaining things over the phone; a discussion with a school colleague of the same gender.
